Third day on Exotics rotation and we spent the morning doing annual physical exams on the two cheetahs at the Sunset Zoo.
I did the dental work on the first - just some slight tartar I took care of via a hand-scaler - and anesthesia on the second. (Yes, Dad, I made sure to pull the ET tube before he bit my hand off :] ) It was really neat! Just like working on a big, furry Greyhound ... that smelled bad. With huge teeth. (Yes, Linda, I smelled the neck of the first one.)
We also took a look at the two
swift foxes, one of which may be coming in later this week (meaning tomorrow or Friday) for some radiographs. I'm not sure what's up with him, but I'm very excited!
Tomorrow I get my first case, which is a rat that is almost 3 years old with mammary cancer. Pretty standard, but the client is ... high maintenance, from what I can tell. It's a long story, but boils down to the husband works for a physicist who does a lot of work with rats and so gets his (the husband's) rat advice from the physicist. The wife is a cancer geneticist who wonders why we can't use these human drugs that are being tested on rats on this rat.
Wish me luck!
